Las Vegas - mostly Fremont -- View from Hilton Las Vegas, North Tower. Las Vegas sprang from the desert and became a gambling mecca thanks to workers from the Hoover Dam project who flooded Fremont and the downtown area on the weekends. When construction stopped tourism in Las Vegas almost died, but was revived in the 1950's when mob money created huge luxury hotels along the Las Vegas Strip.
